Cape Fear Old Fashioned Cocktail at Smoke on the Water

One can make an Old Fashioned with almost any kind of brown liquor. The Cape Fear Solera Whiskey with its unusual continuous-aging process in a solera system makes for a rich boozy winter cocktail. The original recipe includes just bitters and sugar. This recipe adds preserved Italian dark cherry and a singed orange for extra oomph.

  • 1 orange slice
  • 2 Amarena cherries*
  • 1 splash simple syrup
  • 3 dashes aromatic bitters
  • 2 ounces Cape Fear Distillery Solera Whiskey
  • 1 charred orange slice**

  1. Add the orange slice, cherries, simple syrup and aromatic bitters to a rocks glass. Using a wooden muddler, mash all the ingredients to bring out aromas and flavors.Add a large square ice cube. Pour in whiskey and stir. Garnish with a slice of charred orange.

*Available in specialty stores and online.

**At Smoke on the Water, the cooks char the outsides of oranges with a kitchen torch and then slice them. The slice would be easily substituted by a wide twist quickly met with a lighter.
