Newsletter No. 14

Our sixth issue is out now, and I couldn’t be more excited to share it with you!

The cover, shot by the talented Mallory Cash, features a plate of lionfish from Rx Chicken & Oysters. It’s a festive scene, with sparkling lights drawing you in and our name front and center. But then your eyes drop to the bottom, and you can’t help but wonder—what is that?

It’s lion fish, served with local vegetables—a dish that occasionally pops up on Rx’s menu. But the real story is how that fish made its way to the plate.

I’d been itching to tell that tale for over a year, but then Kevin Maurer wrote it for The Assembly. When I read his piece, I knew I couldn’t do it better. Trust me—go read it, and you’ll see what I mean.

What’s next? The Port City coffee scene continues to catch my eye.  This time it’s being served in a camper in Surf City or poured in the South Front District into an all plant-based cup. (Spoiler: cassava root.)Did you know there’s a burgeoning scene of backyard fig fanatics in Southeastern North Carolina? Well there is. Want to find out why? This story details the reasons and how two of our community members got hooked. Plus, great illustrations by the woman who was made to paint them, Maya Murano the queen of food watercolorist in Wilmington.
